"Your Newsletter"
 By Maxwell  - April/May 2010 Edition

After the overwhelmingly positive response to March's Newsletter, the SETI.USA Newsletter staff has some big shoes to fill. We would like to take some time to thank all new team members who joined SETI.USA after reading the Newsletter, and all people who complimented us on our new format. Special thanks are due to all of You who provided us with suggestions for how to improve it; please keep those suggestions coming!

You may be asking yourself why some new guy, and not our Editor in Chief, is writing this statement. Our Editor, Top Viking, is taking some time off to spend time with his new grandchild. He has asked me to fill in for him while he is away. I only hope I can begin to live up to the example he has set!

You may also be asking why the Newsletter is so late. There are several reasons, but the biggest is that I'm nowhere near as adept at this as our Editor in Chief. I would like to apologize to all our contributors, the Newsletter staff, and my teammates for the delay in publishing this.

This issue, we have several exciting new additions. We have received submissions from two project scientists, so we can now hear about their projects straight from them. We also have some new regular features in here, one of which is an interview with a team member.

Again, this is "Your Newsletter" - Please let us know what you think!

Best Wishes, from Maxwell

The Earth Day Challenge marked our first 2nd place position in the challenge this year.

We have several articles on PrimeGrid in this edition.

Ides of March - Victory!
  Written By Maxwell - April/May 2010 Edition

The results are final. Cupid and the Tiger ravaged the primes - bringing in an unprecedented 110 "new" primes to the Prime Pages with over half of those making it into the Top 1000. Over 2 Million Tasks (1 Million Work Units) were completed during the Tiger Challenge, resulting in over 23 Million cobblestones awarded. This is an astounding amount of work done for an LLR Challenge.

Congratulations to Team SETI.USA as the top team and to Mr. Hankey and Mumps (of Team SETI.USA) for their second- and third-place individual performances.

Earth Day - Second Place!
  Written By Maxwell - April/May 2010 Edition

The results are final. SETI.USA suffered its first loss during the 2010 PrimeGrid challenge season. It was a very close and fun match with SETI.Germany, and we narrowly missed eking out the victory. One extremely bright spot is that our own team member Mumps found a mega-prime during this challenge. A huge congratulations to him and his find!

Congratulations to Team SETI.USA as the second-place team and to Mr. Hankey and Mumps (of Team SETI.USA) for their second- and fourth-place individual performances. Great work, guys!

The Prime Grid Challenge Series is an annual competition based on the results of monthly or bi-monthly challenges.  The purpose of the Challenge is to spotlight a specific project within PrimeGrid's family of projects as well as to offer a little "healthy" competition for PrimeGrid's participants.  It is also an opportunity for people to learn more about each specific project and have fun doing it. Below is a tentative schedule for 2010.

Welcome to Our New Admins!!!
Written By Maxwell - April/May 2010 Edition

This past month, SETI.USA held elections for Administrator positions on the Message Boards. Our Admins are responsible for maintaining the website and message boards, organizing our message boards, and responding to requests from teammates (including requests to get Your Newsletter posted). It is an often thankless job, so I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for all the work they do behind the scenes! Thank you!!!

So who are they? Their names are Teratoma and Mr. Hankey. Both are respected members of our team, and have graciously agreed to serve in these Administrator positions. They are both doing a fantastic job. To meet and learn more about them, please see the interviews we have with them on Page 6.

AP26 Found!!!
From The PrimeGrid Web

The search is over. A World Record AP26 (Arithmetic Progression of 26 primes) has been found. The finder is Benoăt Perichon [AF>HFR>RR] Jim PROFIT) of France. He is a member of the L'Alliance Francophone team.

The AP26 progression is written as 43142746595714191+23681770*23#*n for n=0..25. It was found by a PS3 running Linux. For more details on this find, please see this forum post.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the AP26 Search. It has been a very challenging and rewarding project. Also, a special thanks to all the programmers who ported AP26, making it the most accessible project at PrimeGrid.

Note: there will be no more work once the queue is empty, so we would like to ask people not running for the badges to stop running AP26 subproject and give a chance for others to reach their final levels.
